Man of the House

Last night we acquired a rooster to round out our little flock. We have provisionally named him "Dude Lebowski" because he's such a mellow guy. Julie arranged for him through the Austin chicken keepers list serve from a lady who had produced several roosters in a batch of chicks and was looking for homes. She assures us that Dude is mellow and relatively quiet for a rooster. And yes, we have gotten approval from our neighbors to have a rooster.

We're hoping that Dude will help to keep the flock protected from varmits. And he's a very pretty bird. He's a mix of araucana and other breeds but the araucana is definitely dominant.

The foreshortening in the picture makes him look bigger than he is compared to the girls but he is a little older and closer to full grown. However, the girls don't seem to be intimidated by him in the least.

Hey, here's another name idea: what about Stanley? Then we could name all the hens either Stella or Blanche, maybe Stella for the Reds and Blanche for the Wyandottes. Or vice-versa.

But can't you picture him crowing "Stella!"? Or glaring at the hens, muttering "Whattya, a buncha queens?"

Yeah, nevermind. He just doesn't seem that surly of a guy.

Hey, why don't we have a naming contest for the new rooster? With a prize to be named later?

Dada's entry in the Man of the House Rooster Naming Contest: Buddy.

Keep in mind that Buddy was also the name she chose when we were drawing "wild things" the other day. So I don't think she's suggesting we name him for the brand of naturally-produced, hormone-free chicken.

He crowed! He's been practicing, but just now, 6:48 in the morning, he crowed a robust cock-a-doodle-do.

Aw. I'm so proud.

Just checking in to see how the Man of the House is doing. He is so pretty and I miss him so much. Not the same at feeding time without him waiting for his special treat. Has a final decision been reached about his name? Carolyn

He's doing very well. He alerted us to a hawk hanging out by the coop the other day and now he doesn't let the hens boss him around.

I think we've settled on Stanley (Kowalski) as his name.
